Assignment 4- Extreme Workout!

The students most fear of it...Deadline is coming! Deadline is coming! All of us really starting to rush out our cutouts. Thanks to Ms. Lisa that have extended our deadline for another week. We had been working out our cutouts at the design studio for like everyday.

After we stick our mahjong paper on the styrofoam board, we'll start to cut the color paper according to what we had did on the mock-up and stick onto it.

Vanessa helping out my clown design.

And I'm helping June's feather girl. :)

Vanessa helped everyone to color the skin color of their cutout.

Later on, I went back to do my own clown since I haven't done mine too! teehee :D

Busying :)

Everyone were doing their own cutouts right now. It's time to be serious since we're out of time. >.<"

Currently everything is progressing but we still think that it might not enough time to complete. So Vanessa and I were staying at the design studio until late night to rush the project.

Busying with her chainsaw

I'm helping out with Vanessa's design of the magician box :)

Vanessa helping me out with my clown's hair :)

WE WERE ALL HELPING EACH OTHERS LIKE A FAMILY :)

In progress..can't wait for it!

So basically, both of us really stayed at the studio from 9a.m in the morning till 2a.m midnight which means we were actually worked this cutouts for 17 hours straight!

Yes, we got bored and we used the extra pieces of paper for the magician's expression. To be honest, that is the expression that we put on our face as well. =.="

The worst is my phone battery ran out which makes me crazy at night. The second worst is got people came to my hostel room to spray the control pest stuff and I'm not allowed to go in my room for 6 hours. :'(

After sticking the color and others, I'll start cutting out the styrofoam at the face part and other extra places. However, after over worked out until midnight, with a tired and not enough sleep, people's mood really do change.. so for the first cut, I stab onto the clown's face mercilessly.

Sorry, my Mr. Clown :P

I went back to my room about 2.30am and I need to start cleaning and wiping my whole room since the control-pest stuff was quite poisonous. I finished cleaning my room later and that time was already 4am. Extremely tired I really am.  :(

Assignemnt 4- Preparation..

Ms. Lisa had given about two weeks for us to build our face cutouts same for the other groups as well. It really seemed impossible to completed it but thank god, I was in the same group with June, Vanessa, Shazreen, Kanis and Yasmin because we were all very cooperative and work together with a teamwork spirit! :) We all took the school bus to Sunway Pyramid together and bought the materials that we might need from Popular's store. We bought about 11 pieces of Styrofoam boards as the supports for the cutouts and others back to campus by taxi.

Since we need to find boxes, I asked the 7 Eleven's staff whether they could give us those boxes since they put it in a big plastic bag and left it at the corner there like a trash. The staff generous enough and called me just take it. The staff even say jokes to me, "No need to pay, if you want, one box for 5 cent." LOL

took from the 7 Eleven's staff :)

And it's time for us to get STARTED! :)

We estimated our cutout's height would be about 5 feet and a half which means 2 piece and a half piece of mahjong paper combined as the average height of a person. It isn't that easy since I'm not good at measuring the proportion of human figure nor cartoon figure, so it's quite challenging to estimate the character's hands and legs.

We're tracing out our tiny scale drawing onto huge paper.

After while, we started have some fun with these boxes. :P

We're enjoying!! :D

Assignment 4- Face Cutouts! :)

For the color, I get my inspiration from one of my Facebook friend, she took a picture with many clowns and that where I get my inspiration. However, I still pick the color that I like because I don't wish to copy the object that has been made by others. Besides, clown needs to be very colorful and funky so just added lots of color will do. Here's the picture of it. :)

Credits: the owner, one of my FB friend.

We need to build a mock-up of the face cutouts structure before we build the real size one. We had spent about 3 hours to build this little thing and we thought it looks pretty good even if it was in small size. I had drawn this little clown for the mock-up. Since it called clown, I mixed several colors on it so that it would give a cheerful look. Besides, it can either hold the balloons, colorful umbrella or juggler ball. (It's so hard to choose)  :)

My Sketch :)

I changed the clown a little because it will be too tall if my clown standing on the ball. So when I draw it on the mock-up, it looks like this,

Mock-up shorty clown? :)

And when all combined together, our mock-up looks perfect! :D

Full view mock-up :)

Can't wait to see it in life size, 6 feet tall! BRING IT ON! Teehee :)

No More Ticket Booth!?

Unfortunately, our previous object, ticket booth which will be built for the Carnival day was sadly put aside because Ms. Lisa and the class decided to make them more functional rather than just a decorative structures. Then we changed to face cutouts after long consideration.

The plan is using lots of huge cardboard and different pieces of board combined together like a hamburger and draw the carnival characters like clowns, magicians, and others on the mahjong papers. Then cut out their faces so it allows people to place their heads there and take pictures. Well, I think this are more functional compared to ticket booth but I do think ticket booth is the ART and a design student should build out. Lastly, no more cookie for everyone. :(

Edited by me :P

By the way, here's the last thing we should remember for our ticket booth...

Assignment 4- Color Theory!!

So basically after we had learn and understand about color terms, we need to apply the color theory into our practice. As usual, my pretty lecturer, Ms Lisa asked us to build a sculptures that apply with the color theory. We thought of many themes like food, desserts, carnival, body parts, mechanisms, and even pokemon! :D

But in the end, we had narrowed it down to two and that is Carnival theme or Desserts theme. (No pokemon :'( sob*)

Banana Splits and Doodle Train :)

Actually there's one more which is marshmallow but i forgot to draw it out. Teehee~ :)

At last, we chose Carnival over Desserts, even though I felt wanna do BOTH! However, when Ms. Lisa asked us to vote for which theme we will go for it, the situation when voting for Carnival theme was like...

THIS!!!!
So obviously Desserts theme doesn't stand any chances at all. After this, we are going to build out and make it BIG, LARGE and AWESOME! The class has divided into 6 groups with 5 or 6 members each and we will start this project. Basically our group will be doing the ticket booth, without selling tickets but maybe would handling out cookies. It will be about 6 feet tall for the ticket booth because we wanted people to go inside that booth and just to make it an interactive exhibition.

Things are getting really interesting since we'll gonna build a HUGE objects. There's one group had to make a Ferris Wheel which is about 10 feet tall. Hmm.. I wonder if they're able to make it or not since it was a huge object but design student never easily giving up! :)

Right now, we will need to think about the materials to construct it and also the entire structure of the ticket booth. :)

Color Representation

1. Royalty and Regality
Purple color- Because purple elite status stem from the rarity and cost of the dye originally used to produce it. During the Ancient Roman Times, purple fabric used to be so outrageously expensive that only King, Queen and other rulers could afford it. Besides, Queen Elizabeth forbid anyone to wear it except close members of the Royal Family. So the color reflected  as the regal status

2. Freshness
Green color- Because green is the nature's color and nature gives us freshness and harmony. By seeing the green color, you can also feel relaxation and it's good for your eyes too! :)

Assignment 3- Paper Cutouts Final Results :D

When I was cutting these, I was nearly faint due to the thick of the black paper that I bought are quite hard to cut and it had caused my blade blunt and my hand were twisted. However, I had to complete two of my paper cutouts with the theme 'Garden' with my twisted hand and I did it!! :D

Fig 1- 1st paper cutout: Asymmetrical Cutout

This is the garden which I had added a classic or a vintage garden bench and two cats. To make it more mature, I drew the cats tail joined together and make it a love shape. I also try to design the branches and leaves to be more classic and details just to challenge myself. By the way, there's a squirrel on the tree. Spot it! :)

Fig 2- 2nd paper cutout: Symmetrical Cutout

This is the symmetrical cutout which I basically added the cats.. AGAIN!? Besides, I decided to put the white color fences at the back to make it look more like gardens style and I added the swing which tied on the branches. I followed my pretty lecturer'suggestion and that is put the background color as baby blue or peach color. So I chose baby blue as the background color and it looks perfectly matched thanks to Ms.Lisa. Moreover, I feel that is not enough design on it so I added a speech bubble with a quiver music note inside of it and put it on top of the cat. I chose red color for music note just to make a little stand out for my design and to be honest, I got this idea the day before presentation. :)

On the presentation, most of my friends really done a fantastic job for the paper cutouts and compared to their works, I feel like mine was a little simple so I was't really happy for my work. I think I could done better than this.

My pretty lecturer, Ms.Lisa reviewed my paper cutouts and she said she preferred my figure 2 cutout because it's cute. For the figure 1, she said that is very nice yet the cutting skill at the bench was poor because the cutting wasn't clean and clear due to my blunted blade.

However, through out this assignment, I know how to use and control the blade more efficiently now. Maybe I should try using knife and do fruits cutout or vegetables cutout since I'm a little good to handling blade, I might able to control knife as well.

How I cut my Symmetrical paper cutout:
1. Draw half of your design on the black color paper
2. Cut out your design
3. Draw the outline of your design at the butter paper
4. Flip your butter paper's back to the front. It will end up become your design is below
5. Using pencils and shade the back of your design which is at the butter paper
6. Put the shaded butter paper onto the back of your black color paper
7. Follow the outline and trace it at the back of the black color paper
8. Then cut out both side of black color paper and you'll get a symmetrical design :)

I used different method to do this because I don't wish to fold my paper into half and leave a deep line on my products. :)

Lessons of the Assignment!!
I learnt how to be more Patient with my assignment. Honestly, I accidentally cut off many of my tree leaves for the figure 1, Asymmetrical cutout. Basically, you can see that my tree was a bit bold. Teehee :)

Next is Time Management. Never ever do your assignment at last minute because it'll just make your paper cutout looks horrible and incomplete. Time management really are important. I need to calculate how long I need to take to complete one product. If you didn't analyze or manage your time well, it really drives you crazy in the end and you'll go simply cut it.

Determination is also the key in this assignment. During sketching, I just draw what I want in the sketchbook without determine it. I did not realize and didn't ask myself, " How am I suppose to handle the branches and leaves?". In the end, I had wasted my precious time thinking on it.  sob* :'(

Well, after completed my final products, I only feel like half satisfying because I think I can go further than this.

No Pain No Gain.

JUST FOR FUN :)

I used my products and added some pictures effect just for fun. By looking at this, makes me wanna try sketch or paint out my products.  Teehee :)
