Life is Full of Colors!! :)

Definitions

Hue
- Hue is another word for color.
- Typically described the name of the color
- Example: red, blue, yellow, green, orange
- It is the colors which is out of the light spectrum.
- Without adding tint or shade on it.
Hue = Color :)

Value
- Value is important in art because we see object and identify the object by how dark or light of the object.

Saturation
- To purify or intensity of the color from bright to dull chromatic purity.
- Bright means full saturation, dull means low saturation.
- The vivid color means high saturated color and the dull color means low saturation color
- The higher the saturation of a color, the more pure the color will be.

There are 2 types of saturation:
  • Saturated colors: Intense or high- intensity. The color is sharp and usually straight out of the paint tube.
  • Unsaturated colors: Low-intensity and the color is smoky and muddy.

Secondary Colors
- Secondary color is the color which created by mixing 2 primary colors together.
- The secondary colors are green, orange and violet.

Red (Primary) + Blue (Primary) = Violet (Secondary)
Yellow (Primary) + Blue (Primary) = Green (Secondary)
Red (Primary) + Yellow (Primary) = Orange (Secondary)

Primary and Secondary Colors

Tertiary Colors
- Created when a primary color mixed with a secondary color.
- The tertiary colors are red-orange, yellow-orange, yellow green, blue-green, blue-purple and red-purple

Color Representation

1. Royalty and Regality
Purple color- Because purple elite status stem from the rarity and cost of the dye originally used to produce it. During the Ancient Roman Times, purple fabric used to be so outrageously expensive that only King, Queen and other rulers could afford it. Besides, Queen Elizabeth forbid anyone to wear it except close members of the Royal Family. So the color reflected  as the regal status

2. Freshness
Green color- Because green is the nature's color and nature gives us freshness and harmony. By seeing the green color, you can also feel relaxation and it's good for your eyes too! :)

3. Passion
Red color- Because red associated with energy, war, power, strength,  passion and desire. Red color is also a very emotionally intense color.

Assignment 3- Paper Cutouts Final Results :D

When I was cutting these, I was nearly faint due to the thick of the black paper that I bought are quite hard to cut and it had caused my blade blunt and my hand were twisted. However, I had to complete two of my paper cutouts with the theme 'Garden' with my twisted hand and I did it!! :D

Fig 1- 1st paper cutout: Asymmetrical Cutout

This is the garden which I had added a classic or a vintage garden bench and two cats. To make it more mature, I drew the cats tail joined together and make it a love shape. I also try to design the branches and leaves to be more classic and details just to challenge myself. By the way, there's a squirrel on the tree. Spot it! :)

Fig 2- 2nd paper cutout: Symmetrical Cutout

This is the symmetrical cutout which I basically added the cats.. AGAIN!? Besides, I decided to put the white color fences at the back to make it look more like gardens style and I added the swing which tied on the branches. I followed my pretty lecturer'suggestion and that is put the background color as baby blue or peach color. So I chose baby blue as the background color and it looks perfectly matched thanks to Ms.Lisa. Moreover, I feel that is not enough design on it so I added a speech bubble with a quiver music note inside of it and put it on top of the cat. I chose red color for music note just to make a little stand out for my design and to be honest, I got this idea the day before presentation. :)

On the presentation, most of my friends really done a fantastic job for the paper cutouts and compared to their works, I feel like mine was a little simple so I was't really happy for my work. I think I could done better than this.

My pretty lecturer, Ms.Lisa reviewed my paper cutouts and she said she preferred my figure 2 cutout because it's cute. For the figure 1, she said that is very nice yet the cutting skill at the bench was poor because the cutting wasn't clean and clear due to my blunted blade.

However, through out this assignment, I know how to use and control the blade more efficiently now. Maybe I should try using knife and do fruits cutout or vegetables cutout since I'm a little good to handling blade, I might able to control knife as well.

How I cut my Symmetrical paper cutout:
1. Draw half of your design on the black color paper
2. Cut out your design
3. Draw the outline of your design at the butter paper
4. Flip your butter paper's back to the front. It will end up become your design is below
5. Using pencils and shade the back of your design which is at the butter paper
6. Put the shaded butter paper onto the back of your black color paper
7. Follow the outline and trace it at the back of the black color paper
8. Then cut out both side of black color paper and you'll get a symmetrical design :)

I used different method to do this because I don't wish to fold my paper into half and leave a deep line on my products. :)

Lessons of the Assignment!!
I learnt how to be more Patient with my assignment. Honestly, I accidentally cut off many of my tree leaves for the figure 1, Asymmetrical cutout. Basically, you can see that my tree was a bit bold. Teehee :)

Next is Time Management. Never ever do your assignment at last minute because it'll just make your paper cutout looks horrible and incomplete. Time management really are important. I need to calculate how long I need to take to complete one product. If you didn't analyze or manage your time well, it really drives you crazy in the end and you'll go simply cut it.

Determination is also the key in this assignment. During sketching, I just draw what I want in the sketchbook without determine it. I did not realize and didn't ask myself, " How am I suppose to handle the branches and leaves?". In the end, I had wasted my precious time thinking on it.  sob* :'(

Well, after completed my final products, I only feel like half satisfying because I think I can go further than this.

No Pain No Gain.

JUST FOR FUN :)

I used my products and added some pictures effect just for fun. By looking at this, makes me wanna try sketch or paint out my products.  Teehee :)

Assignment 3 has begun!!- Paper Cutouts

THIS IS SPARTA!! Oopss.. I should write it, THIS IS AWESOME! :)

This is just the beginning for the Principles Of Design. After we had presented our assignment 2 last week, the assignment 3 arrived. This assignment is about the Paper cutouts. Ms Lisa showed us some of the design done by our seniors and it was freaking awesome!! Then, Ms Lisa has gave us a talk about the Principle of Design and we should always remember and take note of the Unity and Variety, Balance, Scale and Proportion, Rhythm and Repetition in our designs.

Actually, the paper cutouts are quite similar to the steam punk art movement. Ms Lisa asked us about the Themes and Concept and we have to do a mind map to create a themes for our paper cutout designs. Urghh~ To be honest, I'm suck on doing a mind map.

Then, we have to do an assignment where basically have to choose one of the theme which you preferred the most and make it on the paper cutouts. :)

ASSIGNMENT 3- NOTES

  1. Create 2 different artwork(A4) using paper cutout and collage techniques
  2. It can be in any color you wish
  3. 1 artwork should represent Balance and Symmetry.
  4. 1 artwork should represent Dominance, Space and Weight.
  5. Dateline: 8th October
I chose Gardens as my theme for the paper cutouts because I like the style of the British gardens. I don't know why but it always gives me some unique feels on it. And of course, I do like the garden styles of other countries too. Anyway, I think it will look awesome if it can turn out to be successful cutouts. :)

So, here's what I done on the day. I did 5 sketches based on my theme, Gardens. By the way, please forgive me for my awful sketches.

Sketch #1,  Sketch #2

Sketch #3,  Sketch #4

Sketch #5

Ms Lisa chose sketch 5 as my asymmetrical and for the symmetrical, I need to work more on it. So, I decided to use sketch 1 or sketch 4 as my symmetrical cutouts and add more details on it to make it look more mature and not childish anymore.

Ms.Lisa also told us that after this assignment, we will feel comfortable with handling with blades. Oh yeahh~ teehee :)

Assignment 2- Video Presentation! :)

A Date With The Pooh's Family

Today we had presented our movie. I'm so happy that Ms. Lisa enjoyed my movie and this is all thanks to her too. :) Through this process, I had learned more about the Rules of Third and also the concept of the composition. Besides that, I also learned on how to use the movie maker software and this is so enjoying. Teehee :)

Process of Assignment 2 :)

My Subject Matter and Skill Problem

At first I had chosen bag as my subject matter but it doesn't work so good due to lack of understanding about the rules of third. Therefore, I need to try my best to improve my skills by listening the advise from my lecturer about the colors, brightnest, contrast and also the interception of The Rules of Third.

Tutorial time on Tuesday, Sept 3

I had prepared 2 different subject matters on tutorial time. The first subject matter are wine. I took about 70 pictures of different angles, background and also the types of wine. The second subject matter would be the Pooh bears. These are the examples of the wine pictures that i had taken. Take a look on this video :)

After that, i showed Ms. Lisa the other subject matter of the Poohs and she said that the Poohs as the subject matter are more interesting than the wine. And so, I chosen my Pooh as my priority subject matter.

Hehehe.. It is just a short trailer for my Pooh bear. Soon will upload the Pooh's movie.

Principle Of Design- Composition and Design :)

For today class, our pretty lecturer, Ms.Lisa had showed us through LCD which is about the basic and the important about Design that we as a learning designer should know it. If not, shame on you! :) I mean 'me'.
Two-dimensional design is based on utilize the visual elements and principle of design to create successful composition. What I had learned today was about Elements of Design, Principle for Visual Aesthetics, P.O.D, and Composition.

ELEMENTS OF DESIGN

Elements are the basic that provide the foundation to build composition, which create an aesthetically sound piece. There are 7 elements which we need to know and remember it.
  • Line, Shape, Texture, Space (Positive and Negative), Time and Motion, Color, Typography

Here's the explanation and details about the Elements:

Line
Many types of line include sharp, jagged, hard, soft, thick, thin, ragged and irregular. The function of the design will dictate which type of line to choose form (if any).

sources: http://phobos.ramapo.edu

Shape
Shapes are line limited to two dimensions. For instance, lengths and width that have connecting point which path creates a 2 dimensional shape, be it geometric or organic.

Texture
Achieved by using imagery like brick, fur, smooth, rocks, marbles etc. The key to successful treatment of texture is to have proper contrast and to give the 'illusion' depth and surface.

Positive and Negative Space
Positive space is the dark and the Neegative space is the light. Both are important in design because many young designers only concentrate on the positive without considering the negative aspect of the piece.

sources: http://phobos.ramapo.edu
Do you see the two faces? :)

Time and Motion
Time can be depicted through sequential photography, moving object to blur the background or by utilizing repetition and rhythem.

Color
A.Descriptions
Hue- movement within color
Value- color initial
Chroma brightness

B.Schemes
Primary; pigments: Red, Yellow and Blue
Secondary; pigments: Orange, Purple and Green
Monochromatic: One color value range
Complimentary: Opposite colour wheel
Other: Warm/Cool earth tones, Pastels, Metalic, Industrial, etc.

color wheel

Typography
The ability to design with typography is essential. Treating type as shapes can help a composition.
  • Serif means got tail at the end of the end of the alphabet.
  • San Serif is without tail.
  • Form of type Serif, San Serif, Script and Custom.
  • Tracking (spacing of words), Kerning (precise way to control spacing between characters) and Leading (spacing between lines in a paragraph) are some ways to change initial type attributes.
  • Do not manually scale fonts vertically or horizontally. Find a font which suits your purpose.

serif and sans-serif

VISUAL AESTHETICS-THE PRINCIPLE

Principle of design are applied to the Visual Elements to create aesthetic compositions.
  • UNITY AND VARIETY
  • BALANCE
  • SCALE AND PROPORTION
  • DOMINANCE (FOCAL POINT)
  • RHYTHEM AND REPETITION

UNITY AND VARIETY (important)
Unity comes from an aesthetic unification of design elements in a composition, be it by using similar shapes, same typography or a consistent color scheme. Variety is important so a piece does not become mundane. It can be achieved by combining fonts in a layout, changing the background color on pages in a website (but keeping the layout consistent) and mixing organic and geometric shapes.

sources: http://www.sophia.org

BALANCE (important)
An asymmetrical composition can have balance as well. To balance an asymmetrical design is to use large fields of color, larger sized shape(s) and balance through typography.

sources: http://phobos.ramapo.edu

sources: http://practicumjourney.wordpress.com

SCALE AND PROPORTION (important)
Scale is the size relationship between elements and proportion is size relationship of those elements to the composition.

 sources: http://phobos.ramapo.edu

HIERARCHY (focal point/dominance) (important)
Hierarchy is the visible level of order or emphasis in a composition. This adds interest and dominance of information to your work.

RHYTHM AND REPETITION (important)
Repetition is the consistent repeating of visual elements which can create motion, movement, time, continuity and unity. Rhythm is created by repetition. By repeating the same sized and colored circles in a layout and rhythm has a more solid feeling. However, repeating circles of different sizes and colors creates a more dynamic feel.

Personal Style is what sets Designers Apart!

The composition and the 3 phrases of designing:
  1. Research,
  2. Development,
  3. Finalize.

COMPOSITION

  • Format, the first step in design for page layout is choosing your format, portrait, landscape, square, circular, etc.
  • Layout, Symmetrical and Asymmetrical.
  • Grid, guides for graphic elements to line-up vertically, horizontally or diagonally while still considering the basic rules of composition because our eyes and brains crave a certain amount of order and consistency.
  • Rules of Third, breaking the board up into thirds and placing elements along upper lines and at the intersections. Moreover, AVOID discomfort tangent!

  • White Space, as important as the text and graphics on the page is the empty space giving it visual breathing space and emphasis.

These are the notes shown in LCD which given by Ms.Lisa. After what we had seen, Ms.Lisa given us 2 hours to go around the school to choose our own subject matter, holding our 12 inch x 9 inch with a cutout frame of 1.5 inch border mounting board and take 30 pictures of it. We have to use this 2 hours wisely and choose the subject matter wisely.

First Presentation!!

My very first presentation for Principle Of Design and I was freaking nervous!! I had to present my self-potrait which is in A3 size infront of my lecturer and classmate. The art movement which i had chosen within all the art movements is Realism. What I do know about Realism is that Realism emerged in France in1848 but lasted till 1880 and what you had draw is really do exist, can see it in our daily life and reality of the world without idealize it or beautify it. It is just something like taking a picture by a camera. I like the natural beauty which god has created, the truth and 'picture says everything'. This is the reason of why i choose Realism as my art movement. However, the Realism art abandoned and the photography has invented. So here's my half face self-portrait which i had used about 1 day to finished it.

I selected this picture and draw it as my self-portrait because I always feel that when we closed our eyes, we managed to think and flash-back about past which would probably do happen before or it is just imagining, we still put a smile or laugh crazily for it. Therefore, I drawn it out a half face of mine with a closed eye and had a smile on my face.

Basically, this self-portrait was combined with 8 different gradient pencils.
  • 2H, B, 3B, 4B, 5B, 6B, 6H, 7B pencils.
I used my fingers to blend the portrait so it could be more natural. Although my self-portrait not really 100%  same or real from picture, I do enjoy drawing it and this was my first time draw myself.
